What the Ukrainian code is needed for?

The Tax ID is an essential identifier required for almost any formal financial, legal, or administrative action in Ukraine. Whether you plan to live, invest, or conduct business in the country, holding a tax code is a mandatory prerequisite for the following transactions:

  1. Buy any property.
  2. To be employed in a Ukrainian company, organization, or government body.
  3. Opening a bank account.
  4. Company setup in Ukraine or business purchase.
  5. Obtaining a residence permit in Ukraine.
  6. Registration of sole proprietorship in Ukraine.

Any individual that will get a profit or will have a property in Ukraine is obliged to have a tax number. An individual must obtain a taxpayer code if he plans to purchase assets (shares, bonds), cars, or real estate in Ukraine. The identification code is also required if the citizen is going to be employed in Ukraine. Actually, it is impossible to acquire any type of property (that shall be registered by the government, like shares, real estate, etc) not having a taxpayer identification number. Consider also that taxpayer number is required for every notary legal act that is to be made from your name.

How to get a Ukrainian tax id?

The Ukrainian tax authority shall identify you as a potential taxpayer. Basically, it is required to provide to fiscal authorities all data about an individual, like passport data, address of residence, citizenship, place, and date of birth, etc. It is not required to give your biometric data. To obtain the code, first of all, it is necessary to translate your passport into Ukrainian. Documents are submitted to the fiscal authority personally by a citizen or a trustee (under the power of attorney).

The code can be obtained on the basis of a power of attorney. Personal presence is not necessary, but preferable. Foreigners can obtain a tax number at local Taxpayer Service Centers across Ukraine based on their place of residence, stay, or income source. ID number must be issued during five working days by the tax authority since the date of filing the application. All the data and all documents shall be fulfilled correctly. Consider that by Ukrainian law first surname is written. But if an individual does not have an official surname, it is not a ground for refusal.

Privacy of Ukrainian Tax number

It is essential to understand that obtaining a Tax ID in Ukraine does not automatically make you a tax resident of the country; it merely grants the legal and technical capacity to conduct financial transactions and fulfill tax obligations. Additionally, your Tax ID is classified as confidential personal data under Ukrainian law. While possessing this number alone does not grant public access to your personal or bank records, it remains a key identifier that should only be shared with trusted representatives, legal advisors, or accountants in Ukraine.
